Camerawork
A romance film trailer often consists of many angles, shot types and movements, usually with an underlying semantic meaning or representation. Mid- shots are frequently used to set the scene. An example of this would be in the trailer for Love, Rosie, where Rosie and Alex are sat at the beach and a mid shot is shown of Greg and the rest of their classmates at a beach party. This helps the audience to understand and interpret situations and demographics of the various characters. Low angle tilted up shots are often used to represent how the audience are looking up to the characters and their love story. Panning and tracking movements are commonly used in order to represent the attachment between two people, shown through them following each other or walking together. In response to this, I plan to use a few tracking shots of my couple walking and holding hands. Close up shots are used to emphasise the significance/importance of certain things in the narrative. Often these are close ups of the characters face or something the character is holding which immediately allows the audience to notice this specific thing and gets them wondering what part it plays in the narrative. Long/Extreme Long shots are used to show the characters full costume so the audience can make their judgement on the character's personality from this. Establishing shots are used to show the location so the audience can instantly get ideas of what kind of the narrative the film might follow/what characters it might include, based on its location. For example, if the establishing shot shows a high school then the audience know that the stock characters will most likely be teenagers.
Editing
Editing in the romance genre can be used to describe the relationship between shots and the characters they contain. When main characters are being shown, editing such as fast cuts etc can be used in pace with the non-diegetic music in the background. This is an effective way to portray the emotions and atmosphere of the film depending on what action is taking place on the screen. Fades are commonly used to replicate the smoothness of the romantic connection between the two protagonists and how their relationship develops. Shot reverse shot edits are used to clearly show a connection or relationship between two characters, most commonly the romantic relationship between the protagonists. They are usually used in the case of a discussion. The other person doesn't always need to be physically there for the shot reverse shot to work, for example, as technology advances this can be used to show a characters response to an online message.
