Research
I used digital technologies in my research in order to find theories, conventions and examples from which could draw inspiration. I used my phone and my computer as the hardware, looking on the software YouTube to provide trailers for my 8 deconstructions. It was on YouTube that I was also made aware of previous coursework productions by students around the world which were being distributed on the site. This gave me a further idea of realistically what worked, how they both reinforced and challenged their genre and trailer conventions which then helped me with my planning. I used the software provided by Weebly in order to embed “Powtoons” made using the online technology powtoon.com site. I was able to customise these into an interactive video powerpoint as another clear way of presenting my research into the theories. This clear presentation of my research helped for easy reference in my planning stages which followed. In order to get a wide field of market research, I used Survey Monkey, a free software allowing for the creation of a survey which can be broadcast via the link to unsubscribing audience members. I distributed the link on my personal FaceBook account as a considerable proportion of them fit into my target audience. I also emailed the link to a few friends as well as asking my focus group to carry it out. I was then able to use the conclusive features within the site to get an overview of the way in which my audience felt before going into detail in my market research feedback. Using the features provided by Weebly, I was once again able to embed the link and choose for it to open up in a new tab for whoever clicks on the page. I also used prezi for the deconstruction of my ancillary texts where this software allowed me to interactively presenta lot of information through a templated or self-built prezi presentation. This enabled me to give a formulated, cohesive presentation including however much information was necessary, yet still allowing the consumer to zoom in or out at will on various areas. This software allowed me to be creative, yet clear and get across the information needed.
Planning
For my planning I used Weebly’s inbuilt blog page in order to present my journey towards the casting of my two main protagonists. I used this to give updates on any new advances in the development of my thoughts regarding casting and also was able to insert a casting video into one of the posts. This allowed me to keep all of my work together in one place and the casting video genuinely allowed me to test the suitability of my auditionees. Whilst the casting video is of very poor quality, this shows how digital technologies was both a success and failure for me. This was because in editing I was using a software I had never used before, Adobe After Effects and the video didn’t render in sync with the audio, making for audio-visual confusion. This I went back and fixed afterwards. I also continued my use of powtoons and prezis in order to present my information, yet increasingly I used in built features within Weebly as I became more confident using and experimenting with the sight. An example of this was on my Locations Ideas page where I inserted recci shots or shots from the internet of places I was considering filming and explained why in the “caption”, made viewable to my audience when they clicked on each individual image. This allows for interactivity and ease of access to the ideas behind why I considered various locations, whilst also being more visually pleasing as the locations appeared like a mood board collage.
Production
I used the Legeria HF R506camera in order to film my trailer, giving me access to quality footage allowing me to edit some filters and certain filming effects on location whilst filming if I wanted to. The camera was lightweight making it suited to the production of my media product as it involved various locations. The camera also allowed me to use a USB or sim card to connect it to my Apple Mac in order to edit the footage. I was able to therefore quickly transfer the footage put it into Final Cut Pro where I was able to edit it. The features provided by Final Cut allowed me put my clips in a rough order and insert titles explaining the missing footage before it had been filmed, meaning that the following filming days were much more efficient as I had a clearer idea of the footage I wanted to use. I was able to use Imessage in order to easily send drafts from my Apple Mac to my phone in order to show my target audience and get informal feedback, and in addition allowing me to transport it from home to school where I was able to upload it onto YouTube much quicker.
