Headlights are an effective way of lighting up movies for specific contextual effect. They are often used in car chases as they can be used to create a "realistic" silhouette of a potentially dangerous group of characters.
In romance films headlights are obviously often used for the purpose of abiding real life rules, making the characters relatable but also are often used to light up a night time picnic or other adventure. In is used here as "mood" lighting, casting a dim glow on the action. They can also be used here for pathetic fallacy in the rain, where the rain drops are caught in the glare of the headlights. In tragedy, drama or realism films, clips are often shown of the characters over looking an urban motorway or dual carriage way with shallow focus. This means the headlights from the traffic silhouette the characters, giving a sense of either danger or a sense of "characters against the world together". Finally, the colour of the headlights can be changed for effect using simple headlight stickers. This relates to the connotations of different colours creating different moods and atmospheres. Considering that my film is more gritty and realistic, I am most likely to refrain from doing this, however I am undecided whether or not this could be a good opportunity for charcterisation. |
