Romance
Romance films are traditionally romantic love stories which are recorded in visual media for public broadcast in movie theatres and television. These Films focus on passion, emotion and affection between individuals (mainly the main characters of the Film) and they portray the journey that these characters go through through usually led by a "genuine strong, pure and true emotion" for each other. Romance Films make the romantic love story of the search of the two loves for each other the main plot of the story, and occasionally the main characters will face obstacles such as physical illness or mental restraints which threaten to tear apart their union together and their love will be ruined as a result.
Similarly to all strong close relationships between two people, tensions of day-to-day life and the temptation of infidelity enter into the plots of romantic films. Romance films often explore the essential and well known themes of love such as love at first sight, young with older love and a forbidden love which help build the plot of the films storyline. Romance genre films serve as a great escape for viewers who require romantic fantasies for a person and/or couple who can use the storyline as inspiration to help work out their difficulties and find their 'happy ever after'. In Romance films, the subject of overcoming difficulties in the relationship is often implied with a reunion and a final kiss, and in romantic television series, the development of romantic relationships may occur over a series of episodes and a number of different characters may be intertwined in a romantic storyline in different romantic arcs. The main purpose of most romantic films is to present an idellic relationship that the target audience aspire to have.
Romance also has a lot of sub-genres, one of which I have chosen for my film.
Romantic Drama
Romantic Drama films has a plot which usually revolves around an obstacle which prevents the couple from being together in some way. Emotional mood of a scene is often indicated by the soundtrack, which creates an atmosphere of greater insulation for the couple. The conclusion of a romantic drama does not always end in a solution, often ending with a new equilibrium/ way of dealing with the problem. Often in modern drama there is a theme of a major disaster, this can be seen in Titanic, Water for Elephants and the impossible. My theory on this is that with modern advances in technology, it is becoming harder to develop plots in which there is a valid reason for the couple being unable to contact each other, therefore a drastic disaster is a resort to cope with this. Another way for coping with this can be seen in the romantic genres where the audience are led to be frustrating by one or more character/s convincing themselves that they are unable to be together/ are not good enough for the other person. This then cascades into a massive drama.
