Question 2After reviewing the various responses from my focus group, I found that there was a range of ages that took part including some who are 14, therefore not in the appropriate age for my certification of a 15. It was therefore interesting to obtain data from them and compare it to the older groups. One of the notable age differences in the surveys was that multiple responses to the final question revealed that they wanted to see a slightly older romantic couple to themselves. This is possibly due to the age conventions of characters in romance films aged at teenagers being around 17-18. Question 3100% of my focus group, both primary and secondary, said that their favourite genre of film was either romance, comedy, horror or action. Whilst the mode result was action, I was surprised to see that 3 of the male group said that romance was their favourite genre, which is often stereotypically aimed at women. This gives me some sort of basis in the vast range of audiences that I could actually relate a romance film to. It was noticeable that a lot of the younger end of my focus group claimed to prefer horror films, possibly relating to a sort of communal pressure to prove lack of fear. In the older end of my primary focus group, the main preference was for comedy. I believe that being now over the classification age of 15, they may have experienced a more adult level of comedy and therefore able to relate to similar comedic experiences in their educational or social environment. This means they may interact with others in reference to these comedy films, forming a community. The overall preference for action films could relate to the current outburst of the year of the Superhero movies in 2015, where Marvel and DC corporations released multiple superhero action movies. The fact that I put all of the chosen favourite genres as examples on the sheet possibly implies that it was an unfair test as the audience were influenced by the example I gave. Question 4 It is significant to mention that no one across both focus groups said that they "never" watch trailers. There was a dominant response of "sometimes" yet more answers for "always" than rarely and usually. This implies that trailers remain a large part of the marketing campaign for films, and possibly increasingly so in the new age of technology. It also suggests that it is being appreciated over a broad demographic, with my secondary target audience claiming to "sometimes" watch trailers. Question 5 There was a majority purpose for watching trailers in order "to see if it was interesting", emphasising the importance for a trailer to be interesting and engaging to the audience. One of my responses in particular, detailed that they watch trailer in order to see if a character dies. I feel that this links into the idea of revealing too much in trailers and therefore ruining the film, also applying possibly to specific film genres. Question 6 This was quite a controversial question that I thought it was relevant to address in order to see whether a dramatic challenging to the conventions of romance would still attract the same audience. The overall response seemed to be in favour of heterosexual relationship portrayed on screen, relating to reactionary and possibly archaic representations of predominantly heterosexual couples in romance. It is notable that all of the younger boys said that they would prefer this representation on screen, two of which responded with a side note of "because I'm not gay", possibly implying that they believe that target audience would be homosexual people and therefore would be perceived as homosexual if they were to be seen watching it. This possibly implies that the supposedly hanging societal views are possibly still lingering among young people, born in the early 2000s who were still brought up around a controversial time in relation to this subject, yet are not of the age where they have not yet come across arguments to oppose oppositional views to their negative ideals. It is also interesting that the boys immediately perceived "homosexual" to mean a male gay couple as opposed to a lesbian female couple. I feel that it would be interesting if their opinions would have changed based on this amendment and why it was that they jumped to this conclusion. Whilst I would like to challenge conventions and appease the wants of a large majority of my focus group, I feel that with the actors in the community around me currently, it would be difficult (although it shouldn't be) to find two people willing to openly portray such a heavy and controversial role especially in this demographic. Question 7 I asked this question based on observations I have made in some film trailers I have watched which, for me has ruined the entire film by showing pretty much the whole plot in the trailer/s. Whilst some of my audience agreed with my view. A large proportion took the positive oppositional view that this makes it more engaging. In response to this, I plan on incorporating both approaches and revealing some of the plot yet not letting on that the main character actually kills himself. Question 8 There was an even spread of answers in response to this, with one respondent even saying that both aspects of development were important. My trailer will be focusing on a mixture of both, yet in order to not spoil too much of the plot (relating to the previous question) I believe that my trailer may lean slightly more towards engaging my audience through the use of the character relation. Question 9 Surprisingly to me, my focus group tackled this question with a lot of maturity. A lot of them agreed that actors should be attractive, however, more than one individual responded saying that it as possibly only important in some film genres, one suggesting romance. It was notable that the secondary, older group all said that it was not important, whereas the younger group dominantly said it was. This hints towards the types of contextual attractions of the different demographics. I am using attractive actors in my trailer, however, this was more to do with actor availability than by choice. Question 10 It was very interesting to me that a lot of the younger people in my target audience acknowledged that they would want to see a romance film with characters of a slightly older age than them. I believe that this is due to the lack of younger teen romances, with a bias towards the more mature. I believe this is due to the parental intervention in terms of physical freedom of children under 16 and possibly parental ideals in relation to promoting underage relationships. My secondary audience on this claimed not to mind what age the couple were, implying that they possibly are impartial to watching a movie with a young couple, feeling that they are still able to relate to them. Oppositionally, an older couple does not sway their opinion either, although this could be due to the lack of approach to the genre at this age. It is interesting that the recent film "" did so well, including an older couple.
